Offset (ET) 28 rims: the significance of the offset

ET 28 rims have an offset of 28 millimetres. This value describes the distance between the geometric centre of the rim and the surface where it contacts the wheel hub. With a positive offset of 28 millimetres, the contact surface is located outside the centre of the rim.

Compared to a rim with a greater offset, an ET 28 rim sits further out in the wheel arch when the width is the same. Compared to a rim with a lower ET value, it sits correspondingly further in. The offset therefore influences not only the appearance, but also the clearance from the bodywork, chassis and braking system.

Select suitable ET 28 rims

Whether a rim with an ET of 28 is suitable for a particular vehicle depends on several factors. In addition to the offset, rim width, rim diameter, bolt circle, centre bore, load capacity and tyre size must be taken into account.

An unsuitable wheel-tyre combination can result in the rim or tyre rubbing against chassis components, the brake caliper or the bodywork. It must also be ensured that the wheel is sufficiently covered. The vehicle documents, as well as the ABE, ECE approval or the parts certificate for the respective rim, are therefore always decisive.

Alloy and steel rims with ET 28

Rims with ET 28 are available as both alloy rims and steel rims. Alloy rims offer a wide range of designs, including classic five-spoke rims, sporty double-spoke rims or delicate multi-spoke rims. Commonly available finishes include silver, black, anthracite and bronze.

Steel rims are usually designed to be more functional and are often used for winter tyres or as a cost-effective replacement option. They are characterised by their robust construction and comparatively low purchase price.
