ET 15 rims: Offset and effect on the vehicle

ET 15 rims have an offset of 15 millimetres. The offset refers to the distance between the geometric centre of the rim and the surface where the wheel contacts the wheel hub. With a positive value of 15 millimetres, the contact surface is situated slightly outside the centre of the wheel rim.

Compared to a wheel rim with a greater offset, an ET 15 wheel rim sits further out in the wheel arch when the width is identical. This can make the vehicle appear wider and sportier. At the same time, there must be sufficient clearance between the tyres, the bodywork, the chassis and the braking system. A low offset can also alter the load on wheel bearings and chassis components.

Check fit and suitability

The specification ‘ET 15’ is not sufficient to determine whether a rim is suitable for a particular vehicle. Equally important are rim width, rim diameter, bolt circle, centre bore, load capacity and tyre size. The shape of the rim bed and the dimensions of the braking system also influence compatibility.

An unsuitable combination can result in the wheel rubbing against the mudguard, protruding beyond the bodywork or coming into contact with chassis components. The vehicle documents, as well as the ABE, ECE approval or the component certificate for the rim, are therefore crucial.

Alloy and steel rims with ET 15

Rims with an ET of 15 are available as both alloy rims and steel rims. In the case of alloy rims, this offset is frequently found on older vehicles, off-road vehicles, vans or customised conversions. Alloy rims offer a wide range of designs and finishes, including silver, black, anthracite and bronze.

Steel rims with an ET of 15 are usually designed to be functional and robust. They are suitable, for example, for winter tyres, commercial vehicles or vehicles where a durable and cost-effective solution is required.
