Offset (ET) 20 rims: The significance of the offset
ET 20 rims have an offset of 20 millimetres. The offset describes the distance between the centre of the rim and the contact surface by which the wheel is attached to the wheel hub. With a positive offset of 20 millimetres, this contact surface lies correspondingly outside the geometric centre of the rim.
Compared to a rim with a greater offset, an ET 20 rim protrudes further outwards whilst having otherwise identical dimensions. This allows the vehicle to achieve a wider and sportier wheel stance. At the same time, there must be sufficient space in the wheel arch. Neither the tyre nor the rim must come into contact with the bodywork, chassis or brake components.
Check vehicle compatibility carefully
The specification ‘ET 20’ alone is not sufficient to assess a rim’s suitability. In addition, rim width, diameter, bolt circle, centre bore and load capacity must be compatible with the vehicle. The size of the fitted tyres also influences clearance.
An insufficient or incorrect offset can result in the wheel protruding beyond the bodywork or rubbing against the mudguard when the suspension compresses. Furthermore, the load on certain chassis components changes. The vehicle documents, as well as the technical report or approval for the respective rim, are therefore always decisive.
Alloy and steel rims with ET 20
Rims with ET 20 are available as both alloy rims and steel rims. In the case of alloy rims, this offset is frequently offered for sports cars, older model ranges, off-road vehicles or customised conversions. Alloy wheels impress with a wide range of spoke designs and finishes in silver, black, anthracite or bronze.
Steel wheels with an ET of 20 are usually more simply designed and are frequently used as a robust solution for winter tyres or commercial vehicles. However, the specific range on offer depends heavily on the bolt circle and the intended vehicle type.
Well-known suppliers of such rims include:
-
Borbet, Ronal, Dezent and Autec in the alloy wheel sector
-
Dotz and AEZ for sporty or strikingly designed aluminium wheels
-
ALCAR, Accuride and MW in the steel wheel sector
Before purchasing, particular attention should be paid to clearance, wheel cover, load capacity and approval documents.
